The Ghost Island in Japan

Hashima Island which in Japanese means Boundary Island, formerly known as the Island Gunkanjima or Battleship Island. The island was inhabited in 1887 and 1974 as a coal mining facility. Sturdy buildings that have been abandoned and the sea wall around it that make this island be impressed armature and therefore more people know him as the Ghost Island.

The island was established in the early days of industrialization in Japan. Mitsubishi bought the island and start their project in 1890. The purpose of this project is to get the coal out of the sea. They built Japan's first concrete buildings, apartment blocks inhabited in 1916 for their workers and to protect from hurricanes.

In 1959 the population density on the island is 835 people per hectare or 83 500 persons per sq. km. This is the highest population density ever recorded in world history.

When oil replaced coal in Japan in the 1960's coal mines began closing across the country. Included also in Hashima. Mitsubishi officially announced the closing of Hashima in 1974 and is now empty and abandoned, because that is called the Ghost Island.
